But energy deputy minister Mwendoi Akakandelwa has said Total has informed the government and the closure will not affect supply of petroleum products since there were many service stations across the country. Nkombo argued that acknowledging closure by the government was not enough since in some areas there were only Total service stations and closure would affect the travelling public. He advised the government to compel Total Zambia to sell the closed service stations to Zambian entities in line with the Citizens Economic Empowerment policy. “When I raised this issue in Parliament, I had in my mind only Nangoma and Munali but Total is closing down stations countrywide and now they are even removing fuel pump machines, meaning that they do not want anybody to operate the closed outlets,” Nkombo said. “And when Total took over most of these outlets from AGIP and Mobile, they agreed to operate them or sell to people willing to operate the outlets especially that non profitability does not mean that other players cannot make profits.” “Government should oblige Total to sell as a matter of priority to Zambian owned OMCs in line with citizens’ economic empowerment policies,” said Nkombo. Total Zambia managing director Alexis Vok could not be reached for comment on the matter. Last month, Total informed the government about its intention to close down some outlets due to non profitability and so far, the oil marketing company (OMC) has closed and removed fuel pump machines at Munali, Matero, Kafue, Nangoma, Mufulira, Ndola and in Kitwe along Accra Road.
