Dust suppression is a high priority activity at the mine site, with trucks driving along unsealed roads giving rise to huge clouds of dust that can blow into neighbouring towns, polluting the air, penetratingMULTI-FUNCTIONAL WATER PUMP CONTROL VALVE
homes and adversely affecting the health of local communities.
This process is typically managed by having a fleet of CHECK VALVES
large water trucks continuously drive around the affected areas spraying water to suppress the dust.
In the existing system, drivers park their water trucks below the overhead refilling outlet, alight from their vehicles and manually operate the valve to fill the trucks.
This presented a risk to Occupational Health and Safety, with drivers traversing through wet and potentially slippery areas to reach the valve. It was also a very slow manual process.
When BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) started to look at ways to GATE VALVES
automate this system, optimise water usage and get the most out of their flow control equipment, Tyco Flow Control was able to provide the company with a cost effective solution.
The solution involved installing Tyco’s BIFFI Icon F02 electric actuators to control the water flow and fully automate the process at the seven water refilling stations around the mine site.
BMA set up the wireless network and configured the trucks enabling the driver SAFETY VALVES
to fill up without having to leave the vehicle.
The Biffi Icon F02 electric actuators were selected for their modular design features, allowing the actuators to be configured according to on site requirements.
Dust suppression techniques at the Peak Downs mine site now comprise a smartMUD VALVES
combination of automated flow control valves, actuators and controllers in an extremely cost-effective and efficient implementation.
